Finding your Illinois Tax ID Number

This ID number, also known as your Illinois Tax Number, or your Illinois Business Tax Number, is an eight digit number, usually hyphenated in the middle.

This should not be confused with your Federal Employer Identification Number. The two are completely different.

Locating your number is a common problem because most legal entities are not set up correctly. The attorneys can certainly set up the entity and get the FEIN, but many times they forget to set you up with the state.

Your Illinois Tax ID number should be at the top right hand corner of your Illinois Income Tax Return. You can also locate it on any communication sent to you by the Illinois Department of Revenue. If all else fails, you can always call the department. There are plenty of state tax help officers who will be more than happy to assist you.

It is quite possible that you don’t have one in the first place. If so, you will need to fill out Illinois Form REG – 1. It’s a basic registration form that explains the type of business you have, and which Illinois Department of Revenue Taxes you are liable for. Please get some help in filling this out. If you do it wrong, straightening it out is rather difficult. You don’t want the state coming after you for sales tax if you don’t collect any.
