Illinois sales & use tax

Not filling your Illinois ST-1, or Sales and Use Tax Return, creates a particularly difficult situation. If you wait too long, The Computer System at The Illinois Department of Revenue will automatically revoke your sales tax number, effectively putting you out of business.

If you are caught selling tangible items at retail without a valid sales tax number, it’s a felony. If they are about to revoke your number, you can request an administrative hearing. This will do nothing except put off the inevitable. There is no true defense. You can allege this or that, but that money doesn't belong to you. It's the state's. You are the trustee, responsible for getting the money down to Springfield. If you are not responsible enough to do that, then they aren't going to let you collect any more money for them.

Get your stuff together and bring it in, so that we can get the returns filed.
