Accounting Articles > Illinois Department of Revenue:

Chicago Sales tax rate

As of the beginning of 2008, the sales tax rate for general merchandise in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois is 9%. Under county legislation, as of the fall of 2008, it will have gone up to 10.25%.

Food, drugs, and medical appliances are at 2%.

Check with the department to be sure. You never know when some greedy politician is going to change this sort of thing. We’re already taxed at one of the highest rates in the nation, but someone has always got something else the needs to get funded.
