Who should attend an IRS audit?

This depends on the type of audit, but generally, we try to keep out clients away from the auditors.

In many instances, the auditor will need to tour the business being audited and ask questions of the owner. When this is the case, we try to keep it simple, and if at all possible, short. The main concept here is that your legally designated representative should be the main contact for the auditor.

When clients get in front of an auditor, they generally can’t help being nervous. They will sometimes stutter and stammer, saying things that just aren’t true because they are so nervous. This might cause an auditor, who is trained to pick up on these things, to be even more aggressive than they normally would be.

Your most basic right as a tax payer is the right to representation. If at all humanly possible, try to keep yourself out of the auditing process by finding adequate, experienced, and professional representation.
