IRS Refund Tax Status

For Individuals

If you would like to check the status of your income tax refund you may do so by both going to IRS.gov and using the Where’s My Refund application or by calling 1-800-829-4477. You will need your filing status, social security number, and the exact amount of your refund. Please note that the Internal Revenue Service functions as a collection agency on behalf of the federal government. Any information that they obtain may be used against you in any on-going collection efforts. As always, whenever contacting an IRS employee, be courteous no matter what the situation.

For Businesses, Estates, and Trusts

You may be able to confirm the status of your return by calling 1-800-829-4933. You will need to have all of the relevant information on the entity such as the name, address, and federal employer identification number. The agent will also verify that you are the owner or responsible party of the entity. If you are not, then the officer cannot provide you with any information. They will ask for your name, telephone number, and social security number. Once again, please remember that the Internal Revenue Service functions as a collection agency on behalf of the federal government. Any information that they obtain may be used against you in any on-going collection efforts.
