Mayor Brandon Johnson, in yet another victory for his progressive agenda, passed a new city ordinance mandating that all workers inside Chicago be granted five paid sick days and five paid vacation days in any given 12 month period. This new ordinance goes into effect at the beginning of next year.
This is by far the most generous and expansive paid leave policy in the nation. Illinois’ new policy, which goes into effect at the same time, is only 5 paid sick days.
Chicago’s new ordinance also mandates the following…
1 – Companies in excess of 100 employees must pay workers up to 7 days of unused paid sick or vacation days when they leave their position.
2 – If you have 51 – 100 employees, the same rule will be phased in over a two year period.
3 – Employers with less than 50 workers are exempt from this requirement.
This new law comes on the heels of other “progressive” successes including a phase out of sub-minimum wage for tipped workers by 2028. Also, the Johnson Administration has placed a referendum on the March Ballot asking voters whether or not they support a major increase to the real estate transfer tax.
By definition, the only thing these new mandates will do is increase the cost of goods and services inside Chicago. Entrepreneurs will be forced to pass these increased costs onto consumers.
I’ve already spoken to several customers who are weighing the expense vs. the cost savings of either moving to the suburbs or out of the state altogether. Our lawmakers have forgotten the most fundamental rule of taxation.
Voters vote with their feet.
Let me leave you with this.
Somewhere, in a faraway land that’s almost unpronounceable, a young American Soldier, Sailor, or Airman is standing their post. As they shiver in the cold, they shift their weapon from one shoulder to the other, longing for any remembrance of home.
They fight off any idea of sleep, as they protect us all.
Sometimes they come home. Sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they leave pieces of their bodies on battlefields. Sometimes they lose their minds, but one thing is always certain.
We ask these young men and women to do the unthinkable for the ungrateful.
These patriots are the tip of the spear. They make sacrifices that are unimaginable to keep us safe. Even after they come home, many would do it all again without a second thought, no matter what they’ve lost. Yet most of the time we remain ungrateful.
Freedom has a price. History teaches us that the only currency it will accept is blood; that of our youngest, strongest, and brightest.
Let’s make it a point of being grateful. If you love your freedom, thank a veteran.
And don’t just do it today on Veterans Day. Thank them every chance you get.
Try to imagine what America would look like without having the strongest military on the planet. Try to imagine how your life would change in that circumstance.
Thank them today, tomorrow, and for the rest of your life.
We’re all going to get through this. Let’s get through it together.
