The Internal Revenue Service last Monday reported that as of June 10, 2022, their backlog on unprocessed returns had been reduced to 11M. They proudly said that they were trying to get through the remainder of the problem by the end of this year.
The Taxpayer Advocate, a government funded arm of the IRS that works on behalf of taxpayers, painted a very different picture. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins reported on Wednesday that the unprocessed backlog had in fact risen to 21.3M returns as of the end of May. This would mean that over the past year, the already ridiculously large backlog had grown by over 1M.
This revelation now has the IRS scrambling to save face.
To put this into perspective, the Service is normally only a little over 2M returns behind.
Many taxpayers are waiting as long as a year to get returns processed and refunds issued.
This all began at the beginning of the pandemic when IRS employees were allowed to work virtually. Now that they’re working from home, it seems as if even less is getting accomplished.
There isn’t anything that we can do about the problem other than wait. Sooner or later your returns will get processed.
