Is That Person Calling Really the IRS?

There are a ton of scams currently being used to separate you from your money. One of the worst includes a call from an “IRS Agent”.

A telemarketer posing as an agent will call saying that you owe back taxes, penalty, and interest. They will then threaten everything imaginable including levies and liens to visits or even jail time if you don’t send them money immediately.

Do they want you to mail a check to an IRS Service Center? Of course not. That would be too reasonable. They want a bank transfer to some hidden account and they want it today.

If this or something even remotely similar ever happens to you, be smart enough to hang up the phone.

The Feds normally initiate contact with a letter. If they don’t get a response, they might knock on your door, but they generally don’t call.

Open your mail. If you’re too afraid for whatever reason to open an IRS Letter, send it to me so that I can.

Not opening IRS correspondence can lead to even bigger problems. Most of the time, they might want or need something to make a determination. If you don’t respond in thirty days or less it could become a costly mistake.

But please don’t be fooled by a telemarketer acting like an IRS Agent. In most instances, the only thing they really want is to separate you from your money.

Let me leave you with this.

If they do knock on your door, ask for identification. All Revenue Officers carry two forms of ID.

The first is an IRS issued credential. The second is an HSPD-12 card which is a form of identification that all government employees carry.

IRS Agents are taught to respect your rights as a taxpayer. In order to enter your premises, they have to ask permission. If you don’t want them inside your office, then politely answer no.

They’ll then begin a series of questions. Unless you’re some sort of terrorist, you aren’t required to answer any questions without having your mouthpiece present.

Your most basic right as a taxpayer is the right to representation. You don’t have to answer questions without having someone there to properly represent your interests.

Be respectful. Don’t yell or be aggressive. Tell them your accountant’s name and telephone number. Make sure they know that your accountant will be happy to help them in any way possible.

Trust me when I say that they would much rather talk to me in the first place. I’m not going to lie to them. I’ll actually be able to answer their questions because I know what they’re talking about. And I’m not going to do something stupid like become aggressive and draw a weapon.

Federal Agents don’t like knocking on doors in the first place. Handle the situation in a professional manner so that things can get better rather than worse.

We’re all going to get through this. Let’s get through it together.
