Now that most of the C-19 Stimulus Money has shut down, I wanted to write about a couple of other SBA Programs that may be of interest.
America’s Seed Fund
This grant program is open to early-stage companies that need to prove their technology and find their market niche. It funds nearly 400 companies annually in fields such as robotics, cloud computing, advanced materials, semiconductors, digital health, and artificial intelligence.
What they look for are ideas that will change the world. Applicants are screened based upon their original idea and go through a competitive process. Initial grants can be as much as $256K with the possibility of an additional $1M in subsequent grants.
Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Programs
These grants encourage small businesses to engage in federal research with the intent of bringing their products or services to market. Together the programs spend more than $3.6B annually with up to 5,000 grants being awarded.
Initial grants range from $50K to $250K. Larger grants are available to build prototypes. Additional information can be found on the SBA website.
Let me leave you with this.
Our Mayor is warning about a return to mask mandates and other C-19 measures if the daily number of new cases goes above 200. We’re currently at 130. We were at 74 one short week ago.
Exactly what other C-19 measures she is referring to is anyone’s guess. Whatever it is, it probably won’t be good for business.
The question becomes, what will the federal response be?
If America’s largest cities start shutting everything down again will they do another round of PPP Loans? Will they do another one year extension on the Employee Retention Credit? Maybe they’ll refund the Restaurant Revitalization Fund?
Most certainly they would extend federal unemployment benefits another year.
I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch but I would certainly spend some time thinking about this. Our new administration’s main legislative agenda seems to have been put on hold.
But if they do begin shutting things down again ahead of fall when flu season again begins, what choice will they have? Think about it and be ready.
