The Small Business Administration announced that it will cut over 40% of its workforce last Friday as part of an agency reorganization. This will bring the agency workforce back to pre-pandemic levels.
During the Covid-19 Era, when the agency was promoting PPP and EIDL Loans, as well as Employee Retention Credits, an additional 2,700 workers were added to the agency to handle the additional workload. This reduction will do nothing but eliminate jobs at the agency which are currently non-essential
SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said in a video posted to social media that the agency is “done wasting millions of tax dollars” and that the changes will “right size the agency to transform the SBA into a high-efficiency engine for America’s entrepreneurs and taxpayers.”
None of the services currently provided by the agency are expected to change.
Let me leave you with this…
When I was a much younger accountant, I went to the Kluczynski Federal Building for my first audit. I was very nervous as I went through security on the first floor.
There was a fifty-year-old Chicago Cop running the security checkpoint. He must have noticed my uneasiness and asked, “Where are you headed?” I said that I was going to the IRS.
He said, “Take that elevator up to 16 and follow the trail of blood and tears. You can’t miss it.”
I remember that like it was yesterday and he was right.
Have any of you ever walked through the offices of a Federal Agency? Given my profession, I’ve had more than one occasion to visit all of the local IRS Facilities.
Whether that visit was before the C-19 Pandemic, when all Federal workers were allowed to work from home or recently after those workers were directed to physically come back to work, there’s one thing that always stands out. You could play golf in those offices and not hit anyone.
Every time I’ve been one, even if it was as many as 35 years ago, they’re always basically empty.
The last time I was in one, there were cubicles for at least 65 people. I counted six people in the office including the receptionist and the two Revenue Officers I was there to meet.
Think about it. Not even ten percent of the people who were supposed to be there were anywhere in sight.
I don’t know about any of the other agencies, but whenever I see this firsthand I think about our tax dollars at work.
We’re all going to get through this. Let’s get through it together.
