The Lasting Effects of The Pandemic

As our elected officials hammer out The CARES Act II Package in Washington, I thought that I would spend some time talking about the lasting effects of this sweeping problem.

A couple of days ago I had a chance to spend some time with a few of my long time friends. They came down to the harbor, we went for a sail, and then we spent some time on the dock. We’re floating on a raft enjoying Champagne on a beautiful Saturday Afternoon. The sun is shining, the geese are swimming by, and all of a sudden my friend just has to jump up and get high.

I had never seen her do this before.

I don’t know how much more relaxed any of us could possibly be at that particular moment. When I questioned her about it, she just looked at me and said that this was now what she did. This fact alone was troubling enough.

But the fact that she was doing this in front of her twenty-one year old daughter was even more disturbing.

A few months ago she had become an empty nester for the first time with her younger daughter leaving her home. At that point the C-19 era began with all of its fear and uncertainty.

And my friend filled that big gaping hole in her life with drugs and booze.

We all knew that this sort of thing was likely. When the C-19 shutdown began, many talked about how many more lives would become casualties of its effects. Whether it’s a business closing, the loss of a job, or the ever-present fear that surrounds us, we all knew that there would be other more lasting effects.

We all knew that those consequences could be much more acute and extreme then any flu bug could possibly become. And I just saw it with my own eyes. Addiction is not any easy thing to see.

When this all began, I asked myself what a win would look like. Way back in March, none of us knew how far this would go. But when this all began, I vowed that I would get through this without losing anything.

There are a lot of ways that one could interpret that. You might think about physical things like your business, your property, or your retirement accounts. Others might think of their relationships with their spouse, their children, or their friends. Others still might think about their health and their ability to lead a reasonable life.

But the first two things don’t even begin to matter without the last. Without your health, you will never be able to maintain the others.

It’s pretty obvious that we are going to be in this for a while. You need to find healthy ways of dealing with the stress, the uncertainty, and the fear. Entrepreneuring isn’t easy. Anyone who ever said that it was, has never done it.

Make sure to schedule in some, “Me Time.”

Find healthy ways of dealing with your issues. If you find that you cannot sleep after watching the news, then be smart enough to turn it off. How about doing something constructive rather than destructive with your time like reading a book and feeding your soul? Ride a bike, go camping with your kids, or take your significant other out for a night on the town.

Get out of the house and do something, anything that helps you.

To my friend and anyone else who may be dealing with the ill effects of this pandemic I have but one thing to say. Please get the help that you obviously need before it’s too late. These things don’t get better on their own. There is no shame in admitting that you need help. Do it now before you lose everything.

For all of my other Brothers and Sisters, I would ask you to take the pledge. These are strange times, and there are probably even stranger ones on the horizon. Let’s all get through this thing in one piece. Let’s get through this thing without losing anything.

If you don’t think that we care about you, you couldn’t be more mistaken. Hand in hand, side by side, I need you to stand up, put your right hand over your heart, and repeat after me…

“We’re all going to get through this. We’re all going to get through this in one piece. And we’re all going to get through this without losing anything.”
