Let me leave you with this.

I’m wondering how many of you had a particular moment in time when the reality of the pandemic hit you like a brick? For me, it was the middle of last summer, when I took my family to Wrigley.

Many will say that they are Cubs fans, but I’m a Chicagoan who was born in Old Town, raised in Ravenswood, still living in Peterson Park. I have only cheered for one team in my entire life. Every year that I have taken breath, I have enjoyed the friendly confines, save one; last year.

Missing it terribly last year, we put on our Cubs regalia, and had dinner across the street in a Bar B Q joint. The windows were open so we could hear the organ and the announcer. As they played the national anthem, something hit me. I had to go across the street.

So I crossed Clark Street and sat on one of the benches in Gallagher Way, and it hit me. All of the hypocrisy, irony, and ridiculousness of the pandemic hit me like a truck. I broke down. All of the fear, anxiety, and insanity of the crises hit me at the same time.

I was able to reverse that experience last night when we went to the game.

It was thirty-eight degrees and the stands were almost empty. The normal crush of humanity one feels just trying to get into Wrigley was non-existent. No lines, no crowds, just a few people there to see a game.

A hot dog and a beer cost a Jackson. No one took any cash. To buy a beer from a vendor, they would only accept plastic.

It seemed like the usher’s only job was to make sure everyone wore a mask. When I had the audacity to object, mentioning that we were outside in the first place, I had to listen to a diatrible of city ordinances. It’s always so much fun to have an older woman shake a boney finger at you.

In yet even more news of the weird they won, but that wasn’t the point.

What it meant to me was that this unholy nightmare is almost over. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

We’re all going to get through this. Let’s get through it together.
