A Word on Entrepreneuring

I could talk about Paid Sick Leave, Forgivable Loans under The CARES Act, or any of the myriad of details which are so important. But this is Friday, and I think that I will talk about something that is really important.

Today, I am going to talk about you.

The very nature of Entrepreneuring is one where we always think of others first. The only way that this thing works in the first place, is if we think of ourselves last. People who don’t do this for a living simply don’t understand that this isn’t a me thing or a you thing.

It’s a them thing.

We have to think about our employees first. We constantly need to make sure that they know how much they are valued and respected. Without them, where would any of us be?

We have to think about our clients first. What business would any of us have, without them? We must constantly anticipate their needs, and always treat them the way that we would want to be treated.

We also need to think about our suppliers first. It’s pretty impossible to fill orders without product. Maintaining solid relationships with our suppliers is a must. What could any of us do without them?

But what about us? What about you, my Brothers and Sisters? What about the crazy nutjob, that started that crazy thing that everyone now relies upon?

Those of us that are actually capable of succeeding at this are generally misunderstood individuals. We’re loners. Outcasts. The type of people that don’t do extraordinarily well in large gatherings.

But we are also the creative geniuses that look at the world differently from the rest. Where everyone else sees failure and misery, we see untapped potential. When the world looks at us and says that it cannot be done, we laugh and roll up our sleeves. Every product or service that you can touch or use was entrepreneured by someone at some time.

So ultimately it’s all about them, but no one would be anywhere without us. Such is the dichotomy of Entrepreneuring, the tightrope that we navigate daily, the true essence of Leadership.

But in order for us to give, from time to time, we need to take. This week was impossibly hard, and not quite over yet. We all need to recharge and relax so that we can actually do our jobs next week.

Take the time necessary this weekend to recenter your soul.

I don’t know what works for you. Is it playing an instrument? Maybe doing an art or a craft? How about some sleep? Yeah, sleep sounds wonderful right now.

So tonight I’ll go home, crack open a bottle of home brew, jump into my hot tub, put on some Coltrane, and close my eyes. I’ll dream of the day when I will again be able to sail my 1974 Seafarer on the gentle winds and challenging waves of our pristine and majestic lake. I’ll imagine the azure ripples of water as that glowing crimson ball of flame sets behind our magnificent lake front. I’ll dream of easier times.

And once I’ve been able to re-center my soul, I’ll put my arms around my lovely wife and let her know that she is the center of my world. I’ll embrace my beautiful daughter, and let her know that she is safe, protected, and loved. Don’t ever forget the people that are closest to you. This is impossibly difficult on them too. They need you now more than ever. In other words…

Lead.

I’m going to sign off now because I have lots of business income tax returns to handle. They may have extended the season, but they certainly haven’t eliminated it.
